Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday directed the Allahabad High Court (HC) to monitor the ongoing investigation by CBI into the Hathras gang rape and murder case. The court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which started the probe into the case on October 10 to approach the High Court with updates of the investigation. The HC will also determine the transfer of trial and security of witnesses and kin of the victim. A bench comprising of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice V Ramasubramanian, and Justice AS Bopanna on October 15 reserved its order in the case on October 15, which came following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a court-monitored investigation by a social activist. Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and women lawyers have raised their voices with the demand to shift trials outside Uttar Pradesh providing safety to the victim’s family members and witnesses. Advocate Seema Kushwaha representing the victim’s family also implored before the apex court to shift the trial to Delhi after the CBI investigation gets over. So far, four men – Sandeep Singh, Ravi, Ramu, and Luvkush Sikarwar were arrested by UP Police for their alleged role in the gang rape and murder of the Hathras victim.
