National: The Vice-President, M Venkaiah Naidu on August 23 called for a national movement for women’s empowerment. And also to ensure that no girl child is left out of school. The flagship scheme ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ has undoubtedly created a positive impact. But there is much work left to be done to change the societal mindset. The population of women in India constitutes about 50 percent of the total population. Progress of India is not possible without involving women. They must have equal opportunities in all spheres. This also includes the political arena. India must express in action that there will be no discrimination. The Vice-President also requested all political parties to arrive at a consensus. All the long-pending proposal to provide adequate reservation to women in parliament and state legislatures should be solved at the earliest. M. Naidu also emphasized on the need for giving equal property rights to women. This is for the economic liberation of women. The Vice-President recently released a report- ‘Status of Sex Ratio at Birth in India’. The report mentions that there was no change in the sex ratio at birth in India from 2001-2017. The number of girl children born is much less than the general or natural norms. This report was done by the Indian Association of Parliamentarians for Population and Development (IAPPD). He also gave stress on the need for rigorous implementation of Pre-conception & Pre-natal Diagnostics Techniques (PC & PNDT) law. This will bring a balance in the sex ratio. There will be zero tolerance towards discrimination or violence against girls and women. He wants every Indian to join hands in building a happy and prosperous India. A country where there will be no discrimination of any kind.
