Five Indian athletes of India has been conferred with the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. This award is India’s highest honour given to a sportsperson. The virtual ceremony was held on August 29. The award winners were connected to President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardees are:
Manika Batra: She is one of the most successful female table tennis player in India. Manika also created history in 2018 when she won four medals at Commonwealth Games. She also won a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games in the mixed doubles category. Batra is the highest Indian table tennis player in the world ranking.
Mariyappan Thangavelu: He is a high jumper from Tamil Nadu. He won the gold medal for India in men’s high jump T-42 category at the 2016 Paralympic Games, Rio. He was also honoured with the Arjuna Award and Padma Shri.
Rani Rampal: She is the captain of India’s National Hockey team. She is also one of the highly decorated female players in the country. She was also the ‘Best Young Player of the Tournament’ in the 2010 Women’s Hockey World Cup.
Rohit Sharma: He is the fourth men’s cricketer to get the prestigious award. The other three cricketers were, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli. Rohit is the only cricketer with 3 double centuries in ODI cricket.
Vinesh Phogat: She is a champion wrestler and is known for creating history in the 2018 Asian Games. In 2018 Asian Games she won a gold medal in the 50kg category of freestyle wrestling. Vinesh has two Commonwealth Games gold medals, a gold and bronze medal at Asian Games.
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat cannot attend the ceremony. She is in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19.
