First woman pugilist from Assam to qualify for Olympics

Assam’s woman pugilist Lovlina Borgohain becomes the first female pugilist from the state to qualify for the Olympics.

Lovlina would be seen fighting it out in the Women’s 69kg Welterweight category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Also, she is the first woman from the state to represent India at the Olympics.

Lovlina Borgohain hails from the Golaghat district in Assam. Lovlina comes from a middle-class family. Her father is a businessman, while her mother is a housewife. She also has two elder twin sisters.

She started off with May Thai, but later switched to boxing when an opportunity presented itself. It is reported that she participated in a trial conducted by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at her school where she caught the eye of Padum Boro – the coach under whom she started practicing the sport in 2012.
