Chinese Foreign Ministry; Maintaining Peace With India A Priority

International: The Chinese Foreign Ministry in a conference said that maintaining peace with India is a priority. Zhao Lijian stated that maintaining peace and deepening strategic trust with India is China’s diplomatic priority. Beijing wants to expand its shared interests with its neighbors.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian briefly outlined Beijing’s plans for bilateral ties with India, Russia, Japan, the US, and the EU. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic deeply impacted the world and international diplomacy. Zhao was responding to a question on China’s current diplomatic work and its diplomatic priorities looking ahead.

Zhao stated, “For the China-India relationship, the two sides should jointly safeguard peace and security in the border areas and maintain steady and sound development of bilateral ties.”
He further added, “We will continue to deepen strategic mutual trust. We plan to expand shared interests with our neighbors and other developing countries.”

The Chinese official did not make any reference to the ongoing tension between India and China. The ongoing tension is due to the clash along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. The two countries held several rounds of diplomatic and military talks to calm the tension. But the process is not yet complete.
The Chinese spokesperson also said that China will undertake corporation in drug and vaccine research and development. China will provide assistance to countries in need and will improve global public health governance.

On July 30, India rejected China’s claim that disengagement has been completed at most locations along their disputed border. They called on Beijing to work sincerely for complete de-escalation and full restoration of peace along the LAC. Anurag Srivastava, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson also acknowledged there has been “some progress” towards disengagement and de-escalation along the LAC. Although the process is far from complete.
