Wild jumbo kills one man in Digboi Range

A 71-year-old man named Chitranjan Chakraborty succumbed to death after being attacked by a wild elephant at Durgabari, Digboi. Durgabari falls under the Digboi range of the Digboi Forest Division. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday.
On getting the information, forest personnel rushed to the site of the incident and conducted necessary formalities. A detailed report on the incident will be submitted soon. The Range Officer has given primary assistance to the kin of the deceased for carrying out the last rites. A compensation of Rs 4 lakhs will be given to the victim’s next of kin by the Environment and Forest Department after receipt of the post-mortem report and other documents.
Wild elephants are known to pass through the various elephant corridors in the Dehing Patkai region. Three of these corridors, Kathabari, Golai Powai, and Bogapani comes under the Digboi forest division. The place of the incident is less than 10 km from the Bogapani elephant corridor. Man-elephant conflict is a running theme in the Tinsukia district, with wild elephants killing one person in the Doomdooma forest division in April this year, and another person in the Jagun forest range in June this year.
