13th June, Guwahati: An FIR was registered against Oil India Limited (OIL) and its outsourced well operator John Energy for Baghjan gas well blowout. According to reports, police registered the FIR under relevant IPC sections and Disaster Management Act. The FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by journalist Apurva Ballav Goswami. He claimed the incident occurred as drilling was done in the absence of experts from OIL and blowout preventive arrangements.

Goswami filed the complaint at Baghjan Police Station on June 8. The complaint was filed against senior officials of two companies including the Chairman and MD of OIL.The incident took place in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district. This incident has adversely affected the biodiversity of the adjacent Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. Also, the people lodged in the relief camps are not able to maintain social distancing rules amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Till now 2 OIL personals died and 7000 people were displaced after a massive explosion led to a fire. The fire broke out exactly two weeks after a gas well in the area had started leaking gas and condensate uncontrollably.
