The Gauhati High Court on Wednesday issued notice to Raijor Dal MLA from Sivasagar Akhil Gogoi to appear before court in two cases filed by NIA challenging the special NIA court’s verdicts in Chandmari police station case and the Chabua police station case.
Informing this, Gogoi’s advocate Krishna Gogoi said that the court has given three weeks time to Akhil Gogoi to appear before the court.
Finding no adequate material to frame charges, the special NIA court on July 1 discharged Gogoi of all charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 in the last pending NIA case (registered at Chandmari police station). Earlier to that, the NIA court on June 22 discharged Gogoi of all charges under UA(P) Act 1967 in the Chabua police station case.
After that, the NIA moved the high court challenging the verdicts of the special NIA court.
Gogoi was arrested on December 12, 2019 for his role in anti-Citizenship Amendment Bill protests. Several cases were registered at different police stations against him; of which Chandmari and Chabua police stations cases were transferred to NIA two days after his arrest.
He stayed in judicial custody for more than 18 months. He is the first to contest and win an election from jail in Assam.
