Assam’s New Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratory Becomes Operational In JMCH

News Desk: The Assam Health Department has made operational another Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL). The COVID-19 testing facility is set up at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) on July 27.

This is the 17th Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory in Assam. The main objective is to strengthen up the COVID-19 testing facilities in Assam.


Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed about the new VRDL on his twitter handle.

He said that he is happy to share the fact that the government has operationalized one more VRDL. The VRDL is situated on the campus of Jorhat Medical College. Assam now has 17 Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL). Till the month of January, there was not a single VRDL in Assam.


Till now, Assam has carried out more than Seven Lakh COVID-19 detection tests. From the middle of June, the testing for COVID-19 has ramped up. This was done in view of the spike in positive cases in Assam from June.

The Union Health Minister also asked Assam to ramp up testing facilities at the earliest.
