Assam police teams across the State are busting drug rackets, arresting peddlers, and recovering narcotics and cash.

But not every time the police is successful in bringing the drug peddlers to justice.

On Monday, the Gauhati High Court granted bail to a woman who was arrested under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act after the Guwahati Police failed to file a charge-sheet within the stipulated time.

“I have found force in the contention raised on behalf of the accused petitioner. As no charge sheet has been submitted to date, the accused petitioner is entitled to default bail under Section 167(2), CrPC,” stated the order by Justice Manish Choudhury.

The accused, Bimala Kalita was arrested by the Basistha Police following an FIR (First Information Report) lodged on 02.04.2021.

The police had recovered two kg suspected ganja from the house of Kalita. Accordingly, a case (632/2021) was registered for offenses under Sections 20(b)/29 of the NDPS Act.
