Himanta Biswa Sarma Completes One Month in Office- A Brief Summary

Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the Chief Minister of the state on May 10. As soon as he took charge as the CM of Assam, HBS took various measures to prevent Covid 19 pandemic.
He also instructed the Assam Police department to take strict actions against the drug menace in the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the media stated many important and vital aspects.
The meeting was held at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara on the eve of the completion of one month of Himanta Biswa Sarma as the CM of Assam.

Some of the important aspects of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s meeting in Khanapara are –
• CM HBS handed over a fixed deposit of Rs. 7,81,000 to eleven children have lost both their parents due to Covid 19 pandemic.
• All the 11 children will be provided financial assistance of Rs. 3,500 monthly till they attain the age of 24. The financial assistance will be provided under the Mukhyamantri Sishu Sewa Achoni scheme.

• Himanta Biswa Sarma announced one-time assistance of Rs. 2,50,000 to widows who lost their husbands to Covid 19. The assistance will be given from the Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF).
Moreover, such widows will be eligible for the Orunodoi scheme and widow pension.

The Challenges faced in restricting Covid 19 –
• The day Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the new CM of Assam, the state recorded more than 5,000 Covid positive cases.
• In the next 10 days, Covid cases in the state kept increasing. The daily deaths due to Covid 19 also kept increasing with 80 to 90 deaths daily.
In less than one month, the Assam Government instituted strict regulations to deal with the increasing Covid cases and rising demand for oxygen.
In one month, ICU beds added by Assam Government are –
• 60 in MMCH
• 76 in GMCH
• 60 in SMCH
• 40 in Jorhat MC
• 32 in Barpeta MC
• 6 in Lakhimpur MC and
• 12 in Diphu MC

Assam Government under the guidance of Himanta Biswa Sarma as CM also took initiative such as strict curfew extending to 17 hours daily, setting of new Covid centers and ban on inter-district movement.

War against Drug Cartel –
As soon as Himanta Biswa Sarma became the CM of Assam, he instructed Assam Police Department to take strict action Drug cartels in the state.
In one month, the Assam Police department showed a zero-tolerance policy against drugs. The success list of Assam Police against Drug cartel –
• Illegal substance worth Rs. 23.8 crore seized
1. Heroin worth – Rs. 7,98,48,000
2. Ganja worth – Rs. 6,10,39,049
3. Tablets worth – Rs. 9,02,60,700
4. Morphine – Rs. 50,000
• More than 500 drug peddlers arrested in the past one month.
